Ore Student Notice
Hey Ore students!
I hope you’re all doing well! I’m Paige-Marie Baker-Carroll, your new Experience Coordinator. I’ve done this role before at Station Plaza, and I’m really excited to bring some fresh ideas to this campus.
It might take me a few weeks to fully settle in, but I’m really looking forward to what’s coming — trips, events, sports… you name it!
If there’s anything you used to enjoy that Kieron ran and you don’t see anymore, please let me know. I’ll do everything I can to get it back up and running. You can email me at paige.baker-carroll@escg.ac.uk.
Looking forward to seeing you all around campus!
— Paige
February 2026
Earlier this month marked the start of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse. In Chinese culture, the horse symbolises energy, strength, and freedom. People born in the Year of the Horse are thought to be active, intelligent, and adventurous, with a love for independence. Traditionally, this year is seen as a time for progress, ambition, and pursuing goals with determination.
It’s also February, which means it’s LGBT+ History Month! This year’s theme is Science & Innovation—a perfect opportunity to celebrate the contributions of LGBT+ people to scientific progress, while reflecting on the challenges they’ve historically faced. As part of our celebrations, we highlight five LGBT+ historical figures whose work aligns with this year’s theme:
Barbara Burford – a pioneering medical researcher who established equality and diversity guidelines across the NHS.
Charles Beyer – a locomotive engineer and founding member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
Elke Mackenzie – a botanist who conducted groundbreaking research on Antarctic lichens.
Jemma Redmond – a biotechnologist who developed 3D bioprinters to create tissues and organs.
Robert Boyle – a founder of modern chemistry and a key figure in establishing the scientific method.
These innovators show that LGBT+ people have always contributed to science and technology, often overcoming significant barriers. Their stories inspire us to continue building a world where everyone’s potential can be fully realised.
It’s important for LGBT+ people to be loud and proud, because even today, both around the world and in our own country, many people face barriers simply for being themselves. Celebrating history helps us shine a light on these achievements and reminds us why visibility, acceptance, and advocacy matter.
