What is Ramadan?
We are currently in the midst of Ramadan, but for those who do not celebrate it, you may be wondering what it is all about.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered a sacred month for Muslims around the world. It is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, charity, and community. The month encourages spiritual growth, self-discipline, and empathy for those who are less fortunate.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast each day from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). In the UK, fasting hours can range from 10 to 16+ hours, depending on the time of year.
Each day begins with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor, which helps prepare for the day of fasting ahead. The fast is broken at sunset with a meal known as Iftar, often starting with dates and water, followed by a larger meal shared with family or friends.
Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and drink; it is also about strengthening faith, practising gratitude, and supporting others through acts of kindness and charity.
At a time when the world can sometimes feel fractured, Ramadan reminds us of the importance of compassion, understanding, and community. No matter what you believe, kindness and empathy can go a long way.
