Black History Month 🖤
October is Black History Month, and this year’s theme is ‘Honouring Our Communities’.
But why does Black History Month still matter?
Because history helps us understand how we got here. Black history is part of British history — from the people who have lived and worked in Britain for hundreds of years, to the Windrush generation and the communities shaping our towns and cities today.
It’s also about more than the famous names you might already know. This year is a chance to recognise the teachers, artists, athletes, carers, community leaders, activists and everyday people whose stories have helped shape the world around us.
Black History Month gives us a chance to learn about stories that may have been overlooked, celebrate achievements and understand different experiences.
And while October gives us a reason to focus on these stories, Black history is something we can learn about all year round. It’s part of our shared history.
See it in Hastings
Want to explore more? This October, Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is hosting Tapestry of Black Britons, a special exhibition exploring the stories and contributions of Black and diasporic communities throughout British history.
It’s on from 10 October to 8 November, and students can visit for free.
Why not pop in and have a look? It’s a great chance to see local history from a different perspective and discover stories that you might not have come across before.
