Lewes Bonfire
Thursday 5th November marks one of Sussex's biggest and most unusual traditions – Lewes Bonfire Night!
But did you know there's much more to it than fireworks and sparklers?
🎆 A tradition dating back centuries – Lewes Bonfire Night commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605.
🔥 It's not just about Guy Fawkes! – Lewes also remembers 17 Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake in the town between 1555 and 1557.
👀 Six Bonfire Societies! – Lewes has six main societies, each with its own costumes, traditions, processions and bonfire celebrations.
🔥 A spectacular sight – Thousands of flaming torches are carried through the streets during the evening processions.
🎭 Not your average fancy dress! – Participants wear elaborate historical costumes, carry banners and sometimes burn giant effigies.
🔥 Bonfire Night Safety Tips
Heading out to enjoy the fireworks or a local bonfire? Here are a few things to remember:
🎆 Keep your distance from fireworks and bonfires.
🚧 Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
🔥 Never pick up or touch fireworks, even if they look like they haven't gone off.
👀 Be aware of your surroundings, especially in busy crowds.
📱 Keep your phone charged in case you need it.
🚶 Stick with your friends and plan how you're getting home.
Enjoy the fireworks, have fun and stay safe! 🎇
White Ribbon Day
“Violence against women and girls doesn't come out of nowhere.
It starts with "Just a joke." "Just a bit of banter." "Just boys being boys." We've all heard the excuses.
If we keep laughing it off or saying nothing, we're helping to make it seem like it's okay.
You don't need to make it a big deal. Sometimes it's as simple as saying, "Come on, leave it," calling out sexist content, or speaking up when a group chat goes too far.
If nobody challenges it, nothing changes.
It takes all of us.” ~ White Ribbon.org UK 2026
