SPORT PRIORITIES

Eastbourne

  • What is going well / Who needs praise?

    • Really helpful with college work/assignments, staff help with assignments in terms of pointing out what is good and what needs to improve

    • More organised than last year, more consistent teachers, lessons covered all the time

    • Timetables are good - there are no gaps

    • Lessons include all students. Teachers check that students understand the work before moving on with new content

    • Teachers make it clear what is required in assignments

    • Students feel they are learning new content to them

    • Teachers are working hard to create a good learning/lesson environment

    • Students understand that teachers will make learning practical where possible to enhance the T&L experience

    • Sports Coaching: You are enjoying lessons with the new members of staff and find lessons are smooth and well structured.

    • You appreciate and have welcomed the extra time given for assignments given the staff gaps.

    • You like visual learning, and mocks to help learners feel prepared and had good feedback to build their confidence.

    • Both teaching, lesson and feedback are good. You are clear on working grades and receive feedback to achieve your full potential.

    • You love being at the Sports park, and feel both teachers deserve massive praise as are excellent.

    • You SPT is an excellent teacher, you have a good connection with her, and she always goes over and above to support you.

    • Maths going well, and learners supported to get additional maths.

    • New teachers doing really good job and getting learners where they need to be and really getting ahead – This is echoed by Sports Science with additional comment that they make really good links between practical and theory. You also like check off sheets as these help you know where you are and what you have to do.

    What could we do better?

You Said: You would like to know what assignments we have on at the moment, and to be able to see what else we have coming out to us

We Have: Asked tutors in weekly tutorial sessions to clearly communicate what assignments are due in the next 2 weeks. We will also populate a student friendly assignment hand out/in schedule and share on GC

You Said: You would like more discussion surrounding different career options other than university

We Will: Invite in local companies to give talks on careers with them in the sport and fitness industry

You Said: More practical lessons where possible

We Have: Already made changes to this years timetable (compared to last year) to incorporate practical lessons to help compliment theory lessons

You Said: We would like more support on assignments and more time in lessons to do this

We Will: Make sure that support is on-going with assignments but we are unable to offer lesson time to do assignments as assignment work should be done independently away from college Aas per awarding body rules.

You Said: You would like a consistent teacher in place – Some learners want theory lessons in Tyler rather than the Sports Park due to glare, and issue with chrome books, plus issues moving tables and chairs back and forth and state of tables and chairs – You would also like more 1:1s to help support learners feel on track, whilst a tracker in place but would like to discuss, monitor and look at this more.

We Have: Worked hard this year to ensure staff gaps have been filled. We now have had a consistent teaching team in place, and have done since February half term. No lessons have been collapsed. All students have been issued a student assignment tracking sheet where they and their teachers can track their progress in all assignments. Students have had a number of 1:1s since the end of February, with tailored support from teachers to those students who are behind on their work. However with the staffing gaps faced we appreciate this has previously been less consistent and will ensure a stable teaching team going forward so that you receive the level of support you need throughout the year

You Said: You would like the issue of table and chairs resolved so that this doesn’t waste valuable learning time. You would like the college to bring back multi-sport as learners got to mix between years. We Have: Listened to your feedback and appreciate the issue that moving tables and chairs causes. Whilst we can’t resolve the issue of table and chairs used for lessons in the studios (as this is part of the agreement with WAVE Leisure), we will be looking at alternative classroom spaces for lessons for 23/24. We are unfortunately unable to bring back multi-sports this year, but this is something that we are looking at bringing back next academic year.

You Said: You would like us to look at sequencing as a lot off the more mundane units are covered first (some of which are needed to be front loaded due to exam) but it doesn’t sell the reality of the courses as expected from tasters etc. You would appreciate having some more practical units mixed in.

We Have: Already begun to look at delivery of units for next academic year, and to provide a balanced approach to theory and practical units. However, due to exams in January, some units will naturally be delivered from the start.

You Said: Would like assessment schedule to see when assignments are set and due, and more 1:1 feedback post assignment.

We Have: Created an assignment tracking sheet which details students hand out and hand in dates. Teaching staff always offer the opportunity for 1:1 feedback with learners, more encouragement will be given for learners to take this up.

You Said: You would like more communication in advance if lessons are to be cancelled.

We Have: Posted messages on GC as soon as any lessons might be collapsed due to staff illness and no cover being available.

    What could we do better?

You Said: Polo shirts available for Level 2 UPS

We Will: Confer with the team to make them available for the next academic year.

You Said: UPS could do with storage for uniforms so they can get changed here.

We Will: look into purchasing small lockers for classroom 334

You Said: Food queues too long in the canteen.

We Will: Ensure that the pre-booking system is still in place and signpost that well.

You Said: More Gluten free options and clear signposting for GF

We Will: Pass this on to the food department.

You Said: The pool table is always busy.

We Will: Investigate a time slot being available or ticket system.
